Celebration of National Space Day on 23rd August 2024

As announced by the Hon’ble Prime Minister, the Govt. of India has declared 23rd August of every year as “National Space Day” to commemorate the success of Chandrayaan-3 mission, which accomplished safe and soft-landing of Vikram Lander at ‘Shiv Shakti’[point and deployment of Pragyaan Rover on the lunar surface on 23rd August 2023.  Being the maiden National Space Day, it is proposed to organize widespread celebrations throughout the country in the month of August 2024. The objective is to engage and inspire the youth of the nation towards space technology and its applications. The proposed theme for the National Space Day -2024 is “Touching Lives while Touching the Moon: India’s Space Saga”.

In honor of this occasion, we encourage your institution to organize the following events:

  • One-day Conference/Workshop/ Exhibition centered around themes relevant to National Space Day.
  • Space Ideathon: To be organized at Universities/ institutions to bring out innovative ideas for class 8-12 students.
  • Competition for students: To organize for online competitions  like painting, quiz, model making etc.

It is also informed that the celebrations also mark various other activities being undertaken by different organizations :

  • VIBHA’s Space on Wheels: Mobile exhibition buses will visit universities and colleges. during National Space Day celebrations.
  • The Department of Space is also organizing the following events:
    • Bharathiya Antariksh Hackathon: A national level hackathon will be organized by ISRO. Various problem statements will be announced to the students and will be encouraged to come up with innovative ideas. Based on the responses received, teams will be shortlisted to participate in finale at selected Centres. Students who excel in finale shall be offered internships at ISRO Centres. Winners (Top 3 Nos.) of the Hackathon will be invited to demonstrate the applications during the National Space Day Celebration on August 23, 2024.  
    • ISRO Robotics Challenge.' Being organised to provide the opportunity for the students in the area of space robotics, with a tagline of "Let's build a space robot". The challenge consists of an engineering project where the institutional teams build robots to compete in an extra-terrestrial-inspired arena, performing tasks based on the real-life challenges faced by space robotics. Winners (Top 3 Nos.) of the Robotics Challenge will be invited to demonstrate the projects during the National Space Day Celebration on August 23, 2024.
    • Events at zonal level -Will be coordinated by designated ISRO Centres/ lN-SPACe/ NSIL. These Zonal level celebrations include open-house, exhibitions, round-table discussions or debates etc., on 22nd & 23rd of August 2024. Some programmes can be organized 1-2 weeks prior to the National Space Day, so that glimpses of the nation-vide celebrations/ pre-events can be showcased during the main celebration on August 23,2024.
    • Commemorative plaques/pylons.' A ceremonial unveiling will be carried at designated locations during this period to honour the historic achievement of Chandrayaan-3's successful lunar landing.

This year, a two-day event on 22nd and 23rd August , 2024 will be held at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi showcasing the journey of the Indian Space programme, session for ministries/ industry/start-up/academia, exhibition and release of a major report. We encourage your participation in this event, which includes exhibits in exhibition focused on themes of Space. Please convey your interest in participation in the exhibition at Bharat Mandapam in the attached google form link https://forms.gle/3mKscaS44oG1kmUq5. Subsequently the details for the exhibition will be shared. The day will feature a session specifically tailored for academic institutions as well. This will be coordinated by the IIST providing an excellent opportunity for collaboration and engagement within the space community.
