HOLIKA DAHAN - 13 MARCH 2025

The Story Behind Holika Dahan:

  • Prahlad was a devout follower of Lord Vishnu, while his father, King Hiranyakashipu, was a demon king who wanted to be worshiped instead of the gods. He was furious with his son’s devotion to Vishnu.
  • Holika, the king’s sister, had a boon that made her immune to fire. In an attempt to kill Prahlad, she tricked him into sitting on her lap while she sat in a bonfire. However, as the fire raged, Holika was burned to death because her immunity was only valid when she was alone in the fire, and Prahlad was saved due to his devotion to Lord Vishnu.
  • This event symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, as Prahlad's unwavering faith saved him, and Holika's evil intentions led to her downfall.

Rituals of Holika Dahan:

  • On the eve of Holi, people gather around a large bonfire, which is symbolic of Holika being burned. This ritual signifies the destruction of evil and the burning away of all negativity.
  • People often perform prayers and chant hymns, seeking blessings for happiness, prosperity, and protection from evil forces.
  • The fire is seen as purifying and is believed to bring a fresh start as people prepare for the colorful celebrations of Holi the next day.

The festival of Holi is celebrated with great joy, with people throwing colored powders at each other, dancing, singing, and sharing festive foods. Holika Dahan sets the tone for the joyous spirit of the following day's festivities.
